Britain’s native hedgehog population has decline

Britain’s native hedgehog population has declined by 50% in the last two decades, with less than a million now remaining in the UK. Intensive farming methods, vehicles and bonfires are some of the culprits. Other hazards include ponds, netting, strimmers and slug pellets. Fences and walls in urban and suburban areas prevent hogs from traveling between gardens and cause them to roam long distances for food, while paving over front gardens forces them onto dangerous roads to search for the next green patch. There are lots of small actions we can take to create safer environments for hedgehogs. These include building shelters from woodpiles or in compost heaps, ensuring there are access holes in walls, fences and dense hedges, making ponds safe, checking before strimming, avoiding slug pellets, leaving out extra food (meat-based dog or cat food is ideal), growing native plants and checking or avoiding bonfires. Here are a few more snaps of Yoda the tawny owl. Tawnies have been shown to have excellent spatial memories when compared to most other tested birds. This combined with their fiercely territorial and highly sedentary nature allows them to develop and retain the knowledge of where to find prey and roosting areas in their territory. As well as remembering their favourite spots they are also loyal to their special someone, since tawny owls are usually monogamous, pairing off from the age of one year and staying as a couple for life. 🦉🧠💕

Following on from Flo, this is Basil, another red fox who is just as beautiful but a little more shy. Red foxes live in many diverse habitats around the world, including forests, grasslands, mountains and deserts. They also adapt well to human environments such as farms, suburban areas, and even large communities. They are solitary hunters with a diet as flexible as their home habitat. Their characteristic thick tail or ‘brush’ aids balance, acts as a warm cover in cold weather and functions as a signal flag for communication. 🦊🏔🏙
