This fun guy is a Deer Shield Mushroom, a wood-rot

This fun guy is a Deer Shield Mushroom, a wood-rotting species commonly found on dead stumps and decaying logs particularly in summer and autumn. Its proper name “Pluteus Cervinus” comes from the Latin word for ‘deer’ - my Latin A-Level is finally coming in handy! Although commonly attributed to its tawny colour, the name actually originates from the cystidia cells on its gills which resemble a deer’s head, with two antler-like horns protruding from the top. Despite this mushroom being edible, it’s not particularly tasty, so I’d stick to other snacks even if you spot one! 🍄🌲🧚🏼‍♀️

One of my favourite recent discoveries is Kilve Beach where you can find intricate ammonite fossils in the limestone, marl and black shale landscape. Ammonoids are an extinct group of marine molluscs but you can also see reptiles and belemnites in the ancient rocks. You might even get lucky and find your own fossil souvenir like we did. 🐚🐙🌊

These ‘hairy conservationists’ are the Goats of the Gully, a small herd of Kashmir goats helping to make some room for rare wildflowers by munching on invasive woody plans such as scrub and bramble. You can spot them in the Avon Gorge, which is also home to an array of other amazing species like the peregrine falcon, the world’s fastest bird. 🐐🌲🌸
